The recent advances in lung disease therapy among people with CF have resulted in decreased sputum production for many. While very fortunate, this clinical change has important implications for the study and diagnosis of lung infections and inflammation. As the amount and frequency of expectoration has diminished, new questions arise regarding how surveillance and diagnosis for infection, and research on airway secretions for a variety of reasons, should be performed in the future. In this symposium, international experts on methods for studying the CF lower respiratory tract will review recent trends in expectoration and sample collection among people with CF, promising techniques and methods for diagnosing infections, and the impact on microbiologic and clinical endpoints for infection research.
