This symposium will review current research on host-pathogen interactions in nontuberculous mycobacterial infections. Topics will include both the host response to infection and the bacterial response to immune pressures within the lung. Speakers will discuss innate immune mechanisms of defense against NTM, knowledge of how and where NTM bacilli persist in the human lung, and molecular mechanisms that allow NTM to become more virulent and/or more drug resistant during chronic infection.
