Valerie L. Hearns, MD, FAAFP is a 1985 graduate of Temple University School of Medicine and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. She held admininstrative positions of Vice Chair of the department, OSCE director, Family Medicine clerkship director, and electives director. In 25 years of service to the medial school, committee memberships included Medical Education Committee, Chair of Clinical Clerkship Directors, Chair of OSCE Committee, Admissions Committee, Diversity Health affairs, Chair of Women in Medicine and Science, Best Practices, Clinical Foundations, Frontier and Rural Medicine Steering committee, and many others. Teaching and assessing clinical skills are special interests. She served on the USMLE Step 2 CS case development committee for several years.
Dr. Hearns also had a robust clinical practice in the full range of family medicine with many long term continuity patients.
She has been married for nearly 40 years and has two adult children and a three year old Shih Tzu.
Recreational activities and non work-related interests include attending live concerts, sporting events, broadway shows, yoga, flower gardening, and paper crafting.
Dr. Hearns is currently enjoying retirement while keeping active in some areas of service to the medical school.
