Michael E. Bales, MPH, PhD is the Director of Evaluation at Weill Cornell’s Clinical and Translational Science Center. He applies a variety of methods, including social network analysis, natural language processing, and data visualization to research impact assessment. A certified de-identification professional, he developed policies and procedures for Weill Cornell’s Data Core, a secure, scalable computing and storage environment that allows researchers to work with data while meeting appropriate regulatory requirements for data protection. He has contributed to several open-source software initiatives, including the researcher profiling system VIVO and the author name disambiguation system ReCiter. Dr. Bales obtained his PhD in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, his MPH in Epidemiology at the University of Minnesota, and completed a Public Health Informatics Fellowship at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He teaches the course Science of Team Science: Practical Approaches to Working Effectively in Scientific Teams.
