Medical Librarian
Fargo VA Health Care System
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
My name is Jennifer Jones, and I am a Medical Librarian with the Fargo VA Health Care System in Fargo, North Dakota. My journey to librarianship has been unique, and started with a career in nursing. For 6 1/2 years I served on active duty in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, while being stationed in historically rich places like Bethesda, Maryland, as well as naturally gorgeous locations like Bremerton, Washington. During my time in service I had the honor of assisting in disaster relief missions and providing humanitarian aid in Haiti and throughout Centeral and South America. The areas in which I worked include Hematology/Oncology, Wound Care, Adult and Pediatric Medical Surgical Nursing, and Family Medicine. Even after separating from the Navy I continued to work as a civilian RN with the Naval Hospital in Bremerton, and I am deeply grateful for all of the experiences these positions and opportunities provided me. While the nursing profession will always hold a special place in my heart, it had always been a dream of mine to pursue a career in Library Science. Fond childhood memories of purusing library shelves for the perfect book played a large role in this, yet I also knew that I wanted to honor my time in the medical field. When I decided to make the career change, medical librarianship felt like the perfect direction to take. As a nurse I knew that I had made a very real and personal difference in peoples lives. By entering the medical library field I knew that I would be able to continue to help others, just in new ways. Added to this was a desire to continue to work with military service members and veterans, as their heroism and sacrifices continue to inspire me every day. That is why I jumped at the chance to work with the Fargo VA. My father, a veteran himself, grew up in this city, and now I get to call it home, as well, while working with an amazingly supportive group of people. Each and every one of them strives to provide the best care possible to our nation's heroes, and I am so honored to work alongside them!
