Kristy Steigerwalt, Pharm D., MLS, is a Clinical Medical Librarian at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Health Sciences Library. In 2010 she completed a fellowship funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) focusing on developing leaders in libraries. During this fellowship she worked as the Project Manager for the awarded Bickford Grant focusing on creating and implementing an interactive website for individuals 55 to 79 years of age seeking health information. She graduated with her MLS from the University of Missouri in 2010 and began working at UMKC as a Clinical Medical Librarian in 2011.
As part of the UMKC Health Sciences Library team in 2013 Kristy and fellow Librarian, Sue Sykes Berry, took first place in the international “Health Science Librarians Make a Difference" contest, sponsored by Wolters Kluwer Health. Their video entry, “Spot of Tea” described how she located medical information that changed a patient’s course of treatment. She has also collaborated to publish case studies, posters, a primary observational study related to patron use of library spaces (2019) and a systematic review. In 2015 she was invited to author a bibliographic essay for CHOICE, a publication of the American Library Association, entitled Online Drug Information resources. Arguably the most rewarding of her accomplishments, however, has been her commitment to diversity. In 2014 she was honored to coordinate the Social Justice Film Series: Cancer Cell Research: The Way of All Flesh, the story of Henrietta Lacks for the UMKC Health Sciences campus and its accompanying panel discussion. The CML program she leads received the Outstanding Clinical Librarian Progam for 2019 from HSLNKC. She has presented at multiple conferences on a variety of topics from improving Google Searching techniques (2012) to analyzing what information students find relevant during internal medicine rounds (2014-2017).
