Annette Schultz, PhD, RN is a full professor in the College of Nursing, at the Unviersity of Manitoba; and PI of the Health Services & Structural Determinants of Health Research at St. Boniface Research Centre located at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her program of research explores the interplay of health services, delivery, and policy in relation to population health. Central is the recognition that, in addition to individual-level factors, societal structures and systems also influence health status and healthcare delivery. Over her research career there have been two main topics explored. Currently, her research focus is with First Nation People’s heart health (CIHR funded: 2019-2021; 2014-2018; & CIHR and SSHRC funded: 2015-2017), which includes integrating two-eyed seeing and decolonizing methodologies. As well, for over 10 years Dr. Schultz explored tobacco issues, management, and control in the context of health care services and policies. Within this research topic, areas explored include: smoke free grounds policies in acute care settings, management of tobacco dependence within acute care, tobacco dependence among people living with HIV, youth susceptibility for future smoking, and health equity and social justice issues. Along the way, she collaborated with a national group of health researchers exploring organizational capacity to address health equity within the context of public health, which aligned with her overarching program of research expertise. Since 2014 her primary focus is shifting towards First Nation People’s health. Finally, when designing studies, Dr. Schutlz commonly integrate a variety of research approaches (including particpatory methods), so have considerable experience and expertise with mix-methods approaches.
