About us

Veterinary Healthcare Associates began as Maxwell Animal Clinic, established in Winter Haven over 30 years ago by Dr. John Maxwell. Maxwell Animal Clinic was a one-doctor general practice offering preventative care, dentistry, and standard surgical services to the community. As the years passed, Maxwell Animal Clinic evolved into a thriving 10-doctor general, referral, and emergency facility. Dr. Maxwell mentored Dr. Loren Nations, who is now the owner of Veterinary Healthcare Associates. Dr. Nations is devoted to family and pets and believes they're truly one and the same. Working side by side with Dr. Maxwell, he learned that you could help people by helping their pets. This motivated Dr. Nations to obtain specialty board certification in canine and feline practice in 1999.

  • Meet sweet Lola, along with her mom and grandma! Lola came to Veterinary Healthcare Associates experiencing severe, unexplained seizures. Despite exploring many possibilities, her family struggled to find answers. Dr. Nations, who practices internal medicine and is exceptionally knowledgeable about the impacts of diet on health, suggested a ketogenic diet for Lola. With a few adjustments, and the dedicated monitoring by her primary care veterinarian, Dr. Willis, at our clinic, Lola has been thriving. We're thrilled to share that Lola has been seizure-free for a considerable time, thanks to her family's commitment and the excellent care provided by our team. We're honored to serve you Lola!🐾

  • Not sure what to do in any of the situations numbered above? Knowing pet first aid can be crucial in emergency situations and might even save your pet's life. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind: 1️⃣Poisoning: What's harmful to humans is often harmful to pets. Always adhere to product label instructions and contact an animal poison control center. If you're concerned, head to our emergency room or call 888.426.4435. 2️⃣Fractures: If your pet has a fracture, muzzle them with gauze or a towel to prevent bites. Carefully lay your pet on a flat surface and transport them to the nearest veterinary emergency room on a stable board or blanket to prevent further injury. 3️⃣Burns: In the case of burns, muzzle your pet to keep them from biting. Flush chemicals off with water and apply cold water compresses to severe burns to reduce pain and swelling. 4️⃣Choking: If your pet is still able to breathe but is choking, rush them to the nearest pet emergency room. If you can see the object and it's easily reachable, attempt to gently remove it. If it's not removable and your pet collapses, place both hands on the side of their rib cage and push firmly with the palm of your hand to try to dislodge the object. 5️⃣Not Breathing: If your pet isn't breathing, remain calm. Open their airway by gently pulling the tongue forward and checking for obstructions. If clear, perform rescue breathing by closing the pet’s mouth and breathing directly into their nose until you see the chest expand. Sharing this information with your friends and family could make a critical difference! • Did your veterinary surgeon run in the Disney Princess Half Marathon?😎🏃♀️ We really value keeping active and having fun outside the clinic—especially since we're so close to Disney! It’s just another one of the perks of living, working, and playing in Central Florida. Big cheers to Dr. Barry and Dr. Langer (who we missed a photo of) for crossing the finish line this year in the '24 race! Drop a 🥳 to congratulate them!

  • 🚨When a pet emergency strikes, knowing what to do can make all the difference. Here are some crucial first aid tips for pet owners during #PetFirstAidAwarenessMonth: Dehydration Check: If your cat or dog seems off, check for dehydration by gently pulling up on the skin between the shoulder blades. It should snap back quickly. If it stays tented, your pet needs immediate attention. Poisoning Signs: Watch for alarming signs like external or internal bleeding, dilated pupils, excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth, and seizures. These symptoms can indicate poisoning and require urgent help. Seizure Protocol: If your pet has a seizure, keep it safe but avoid restraint. Stay clear of its mouth to prevent accidental bites, and speak calmly to soothe your pet. Heat Stroke Awareness: Recognize heat stroke signs such as collapse, a body temperature above 104°F, bloody stools or vomit, unsteady movements, heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, very red mucous membranes, and excessive salivation. This is a critical emergency and one we've seen many times due to the Florida heat! Animal Bites: Even minor bites from other animals should be examined by a vet to prevent infection and assess for hidden injuries. Avoid intervening in a dogfight to protect yourself from harm. Bleeding Management: For bleeding emergencies, apply direct pressure with gauze on the wound. If gauze becomes soaked, add more layers without removing the initial ones, and seek veterinary help immediately. In any pet emergency, time is of the essence. Our emergency team at Veterinary Healthcare Associates is here to support you and your pet 24/7, 365 days a year. With round-the-clock availability, you can rest assured that we're here for you!
