  • It’s conference season and many will likely hear the word “innovation” at least once. But at University Health Network's International Conference on Aging, Innovation and Rehabilitation (ICAIR), it was clearly on display for all to see. The annual event brings together scientists, clinicians, entrepreneurs and start-ups from around the world, all with the goal of driving change and making an impact. “Everything is fixable,” said André Picard during his keynote, conveying a sense of optimism for the captivated audience. André’s insight of the Canadian healthcare system allows him to share a unique lens, one of grounding us in the past, explaining the present, and identifying how we can collectively turn the corner on both a safer system, but also, one that is highly competitive on the global stage. “Where do you fit in?” he asked the crowd. His rally for action resonated, and shortly after his talk, the Power Play Pitch Competition really showcased where those in attendance fit in. With each and every pitch presentation, we were blown away with the level of innovation and truly life-changing solutions shown. And the very poignant points André shared during his talk about “not innovating alone” or how we need to address “access and equity” were all seemingly covered off during the competition. HIROC is proud to support #innovation in the #healthcare community and values the dedication and hard work of those striving to make change both here in Canada and across the world. We were also delighted to connect with delegates at our HIROC Brain Bar Pop-Up! Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

  • Happy #NationalNursesWeek!   At HIROC, we are deeply grateful for the dedication and compassion of nurses across our healthcare system. Fortunately for our organization, we have several former nurses who now work as integral members of our team, including our CEO, Catherine Gaulton and Wendy Hooper from our Healthcare Safety and Risk Management team in the picture below, among others from Team HIROC.   “As we celebrate their invaluable contributions this week, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all nurses who tirelessly serve their communities,” said Catherine. “Your unwavering commitment to providing essential care and support to patients and their families each day is truly an inspiration to all of us.”   We are proud to have a wealth of nursing experience at HIROC, which helps us support nurses in any way we can. Whether it’s in providing innovative solutions to their unique needs, or personalized support, we are always here for you, and your safety and well-being are our top priorities.   Thank you, nurses, for everything you do – Happy National Nurses Week! #HIROC #PatientSafety #HealthcareSafety #NursingAppreciation #Nurses

  • Have you heard about the Ontario Risk Network? Below you’ll see a fantastic picture of individuals from the Network, they all were on hand for the 2024 HIROC AGM & Conference this past April (we were delighted to see you all!!) We talked to HIROC’s Nataly Farshait, Director, Healthcare Safety & Risk Management, to spotlight this work. What is the Ontario Risk Network? The Ontario Risk Management Networking Group is a grassroots networking group for risk managers to come together to improve healthcare risk management in Ontario. HIROC is proud to support the Network as we see great value in the community having a safe space to share their experiences, exchange knowledge and learn from each other’s successes. During biweekly virtual meetings, members share their expertise, opinions, standard practices, policies, and lived experiences. There are 130 members from 54 healthcare organizations from across Ontario. The Network is currently managed by Bronwen Edgar (Collingwood General and Marine Hospital) and Kelsi Rousseau (William Osler Health System). What are the benefits of the Network? There are too many benefits to mention, however a few that come to mind include the fact that when individuals have dedicated time to meet with peers from different healthcare facilities, it allows them to meet others who work in healthcare, but in different areas of the province who they may not normally connect with. It also fosters positive networking opportunities, allowing for individuals to build a strong professional network, as well as having the opportunity to seek advice and collaborate on projects. Often, risk managers face similar challenges in their respective organizations. By coming together, they can collaborate on finding innovative solutions to common issues, leveraging collective expertise and resources. Grassroots meetings provide a forum for discussing regulatory requirements, industry standards, and leading practices. Through collaboration, risk managers can work towards developing or refining standards that benefit all healthcare facilities. With the support of HIROC, the networking meetings are a key mechanism for regular educational sessions that support professional development on hot topics in risk management. How does one join the Network? Risk management experts interested in joining are encouraged to email the Ontario Risk Network at ontariorisknetwork@hiroc.com. Members must be approved prior to joining. It was amazing to see so many of the Ontario Risk Network members in person at HIROC’s Annual Conference! We hope to see an even bigger group next year! #riskmanagement #leadership #patientsafety #knowledgesharing

  • For the first time since 2019 community health nurses gathered in-person at the Community Health Nursing: Health for All conference hosted by Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC). Underpinned by the themes of collaboration, quality and wellbeing, it was inspiring to see the community join to together, all with the goal of creating the safest healthcare system. It was also great to connect with some of our Subscribers! HIROC was proud to partner as an Educational Partner and our very own Lori Webel-Edgar brought greetings from Team HIROC and had the honour of introducing the session, Building healthcare coalitions: Finding common ground through standardization of best practices for patient safety. Speakers were from a variety of healthcare organizations: VHA Home HealthCare, SE Health, VON Canada, CarePartners, Paramed and Bayshore Health. Thank you Community Health Nurses of Canada for including us! #healthcare #leadership #patientsafety
