“The health of our planet and the health of our children are inextricably intertwined. Pediatricians like me know this; we see it every day.” On Earth Day, AAP President Dr. Ben Hoffman describes in an AAP Voices blog the prescription he would like to write to address the detrimental effects of climate change on children’s health. Climate change poses an immediate threat to children and teens and the AAP has made environmental health and disaster readiness a strategic initiative. In his blog, Dr. Hoffman shares the firsthand effects of climate change he has witnessed in his home state of Oregon and shares how pediatricians can work together to advocate for better climate policies. We know that kids bear the brunt of climate change’s health impacts, and that climate change exacerbates health inequities, with marginalized and vulnerable populations disproportionately impacted. That’s why pediatricians advocate for climate action. Check out AAP’s resources, tools, and solutions on how to act on climate change and protect children this #EarthDay: https://lnkd.in/eFcXeFzD

AAP President Ben Hoffman recently traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with the AAP Puerto Rico Chapter and the Sociedad Puertorriqueña Pediatría and learned how pediatricians in Puerto Rico are supporting marginalized communities: “I heard story after story about the adversity faced in providing care — from financial struggles to the death and destruction wrought by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Many challenges brought on by the hurricane persist to this day. What got to me was the sheer force of their resilience and resourcefulness and how joyfully committed they are to doing what’s best for kids.” Read more in his latest AAP News column: https://lnkd.in/d8fF2eiP

“There are millions of parents like me who have watched our children come of age in an unrestricted and unprotected digital universe devoid of any guardrails that can keep them safe. It’s time to take action to protect children online.” Pediatrician and mom Molly O’Shea describes in a Stat News op-ed the impact social media platforms have on teens and how the algorithms amplify harmful content. Dr. O’Shea urges Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act to make social media safer for kids and teens. https://bit.ly/49Gytub
