Presentation Description: Given how severe and persistent mental health issues are in first responders, resources should be easily accessible in the workplace. Many workplace environments that house first responders are now moving towards the use of therapy dogs, as they are available throughout the day to aid in therapeutic interaction when needed and are cost effective in treatment of mental and physical health. We will discuss at length the benefits of a therapy dog in the 911 or roll call center, and the scientific proof behind those benefits.
Learning Objectives:
List and explain the benefits of therapy dogs.
Explain how scientific research has shown that therapy dogs in the 911 and roll call center have reduced stress, boosted employee morale, increased trust levels between colleagues, and lead to more effective collaboration.
Identify and explain the differences between a therapy dog and a service dog as they pertain to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
