Recent publications have fostered the concept of identifying patient preferences for effectiveness versus incidence of adverse events for various disease areas including diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Whereas the intent of most of these findings are to inform physician approaches to treatment, knowing a patient’s "willingness to pay " (WTP) for specific drug attributes can also inform formulary decisions and benefit design.

Faculty will summarize evidence of patient preferences and WTP in two disease states. Attendees will be introduced to a matrix incorporating preferred drug attributes into the decision-making process and predict clinical improvement and cost savings. This session will include a panel discussion to highlight the application of these techniques in formulary management and benefit design.

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Describe how patient preferences are determined across two different disease states.
Define an approach on how to apply patient willingness to pay for certain drug attributes in decision making.
Define key areas for managed care application of patient preferences in formulary management and benefit design.
Summarize the perspective of the approach from both the health plan and pharmacy benefit manager.
