The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of health care including the people and processes involved in state Medicaid programs. The pandemic caused a need for rapid changes to benefit structures, enrollment, and systems. Not only did the constant shifting of policy and requirements create the need for quick responses, but the end of the public health emergency is also presenting a unique set of challenges.

This session will focus on the financial and operational challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic from a Medicaid pharmacy fee-for-service perspective and provide insight on how the pandemic may create lasting changes.

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Describe the changes to Medicaid enrollment at the national level due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Explain the changes implemented by state Medicaid programs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Identify how the changes made during the COVID-19 pandemic may impact the future of the Medicaid pharmacy benefit structure.
