Stimulant misuse and overdoses are rising. In 2020, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) report 10.3 million people in the U.S. abuse or misuse central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. Between 1999 and 2020, overdose deaths involving stimulants have risen more than 4,000%. With the growing use and misuse, health plans are challenged with managing this class appropriately. Providers are seeing more patients for stimulant use disorder while compelling evidence for treatments for this disease remain scarce.

This session will highlight trends in the use of stimulants nationally, discuss concerns pertaining to stimulant misuse and overdose data, as well as one health plan’s approach to management. A provider will speak about trends in a local health care system, how patients present, and emerging treatments. If you aren’t paying attention to stimulant use disorder, now is the time to focus.
