For over 30 years, Allan has shared his expertise as a speaker, author, library school instructor and workshop leader in the area of library services to adults & older adults, persons with disabilities, collection development, diversity and technology.
Allan began his professional career in 1974 at the Brooklyn (NY) Public Library working at various branch libraries and as a Science Reference Librarian at the Central Library before becoming the Chief of Service to the Aging.
His interest and involvement in library services to older adults has taken him around the corner and around the world. For example, while at the BPL he was named the recipient of the Frederick Thorpe Traveling Fellowship from the Ulverscroft Foundation visiting libraries in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and was a speaker at the at the Library of Congress, Center for the Book’s "Developing the Lifetime Reading Habit: Libraries, Youth and Elders,” conference. In 2005, he was chosen as one of only four library delegates to the White House Conference on Aging and in 2008 he was invited to speak at the Croatian Library Association.
Allan is the past Chair and currently a member of the ALA RUSA RSS Library Service to an Aging Population Committee and is the Director of the Edison Public Library in New Jersey.
