Dr. Richard J. Silvia is a professor of pharmacy practice at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) in Boston, Mass. In addition to his faculty appointment, he is also a clinical psychiatric pharmacist at the Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester, Mass., where he provides patient care services to individuals with mental illness within the primary care clinics of the center. Working under the supervision of a psychiatrist, he receives patient referrals from the primary care providers to provide psychiatric medications and evaluations to patients. Dr. Silvia is an active member of several pharmacy organizations, including the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP), the national professional organization for psychiatric pharmacists. As the chair of the Professional Affairs Committee for CPNP, he works to improve treatment access and outcomes for patients living with mental illness by helping medical professionals understand the unique contribution of psychiatric pharmacists to the interdisciplinary team.
