Short description: As our nation and schools increase in racial/ethnic diversity, this diversity is not reflected in gifted and talented education. Minoritized students are underrepresented in gifted education nationally and in many districts. While tests contribute to underrepresentation, educators are the primary gatekeepers. Teachers consistently under-refer Black students. Thus, prejudice and discrimination must be addressed. Material and resources to become anti-racist and culturally competent are provided.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Understand the role of prejudice and discrimination in under-referrals and underrepresentation
Become familiar with models of prejudice and discrimination
Become familiar with strategies and resources to be/become culturally competent
