Associate Indigenous Students Leap Ahead (ISLA), Massachusetts
Short description: Districts serving Indigenous kids have no GT programming because none of their children score above the 95th percentile. The European values of our GT programs are uniquely unsuited for gifted Native American kids, whose cultures value collaboration and community success over individual excellence. Come explore a new path with proven results. Find a new definition of giftedness not based on competition.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Explore the differences between a competitive GT mechanism and a non-linear inclusive alternative in identifying and programming for GT students among Native American/Alaska Native tribes and the tribes of the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples
Break into small groups to design collaborative lessons ready to go for Monday morning, and consider how to discern when a student or group of students excels
