Gifted Program Coordinator Arizona State University, Arizona
Short description: Placing students in gifted programs doesn’t guarantee meeting their learning needs. We must create spaces that welcome and empower students to contribute to a community. Holistically embracing gifted children—how they think, feel, and learn—means understanding who they are and where they come from: their backgrounds, cultures, families, and communities. Learn practical strategies for integrating this mindset into culturally-responsive classrooms.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Learn critical approaches for designing professional learning opportunities that embrace equity and celebrate diversity in the classroom
Consider ways to right the wrongs of past injustices that promote exclusiveness in gifted programs, and learn thoughtful, proactive measures for shifting educators' mindsets to instill more inclusive practices
Learn practical strategies to incorporate culturally-relevant pedagogy and develop culturally-responsive teaching practices
