Advocacy Chair Indiana Association for the Gifted, Indiana
Short description: Being notified that your child is “high ability” often brings more questions than answers – What does “high ability” mean? Why was my child identified? What do I do now? In this session, parents learn characteristics of giftedness, about Indiana’s legal requirement to identify and serve gifted students, and how to advocate for services that have worked for other students.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Learn the typical cognitive and affective characteristics associated with giftedness and why those characteristics prompt a need for different learning experiences and environments
Learn how Indiana law applies to gifted education, including the definition of high ability and the requirement for Indiana schools to identify and provide services to high-ability students
Learn the definition's implication on identification practices in Indiana
Learn several different research-based service options that have worked well for Indiana high-ability students and a step-by-step approach to follow when advocating for a child or student
