Short description: With the objective of increased Hispanic engagement and representation in GT programming, we explore the multiplicity of Latinx cultural identities and how the values of America's three most populous Hispanic cultures influence their perceptions of high achievement. We rely both on psychological theory and the lead presenter’s 20+ years of advocacy and teaching experience in Hispanic communities for real-world solutions.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Understand that Hispanic & Latinx populations are comprised of a multiplicity of subcultures with specific values/identities/norms
Recognize how Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban and other cultures variously "buy in" to academic opportunities
Leave with concrete and practical methods of engagement (tailored to cultural values) to increase representation in GT programs
