College and Career Advisor Pine View School for the Gifted, Florida
Short description: In 1969, a grant-funded pilot program was established to serve students identified as gifted in Southwest Florida. Known initially as "The Gifted Experiment," the public magnet school opened with fewer than 40 students spanning grades 4 through 12. Fifty-three years later, Pine View School for the Gifted still survives against scrutiny, criticism, and recurring requests to validate its own existence.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Understand the instructional and curricular model of a self-contained gifted school serving all levels
Recognize the importance of incorporating mental health instruction, self-efficacy identification, and leadership training in student curricula
Understand the need for teacher and administrator training in gifted education practices, to include understanding of the nature and needs of gifted students
