Short description: The American Psychological Association recently apologized for psychologists’ role in promoting racism and White supremacy. This session examines the history and evidence on race and ethnic differences across intelligence tests. A distinction between psychometric bias and equitable assessment is made. Research findings show that equitable intelligence tests measure how well a person can think, not what they know.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
Understand the historical underpinnings of the most widely used intelligence tests and how their limitations have contributed to racism
Distinguish between psychometric test bias and equity as described in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing to identify intelligence test items that reflect what a person knows rather than how well the person can apply their intelligence to answer the question
Make informed decisions based on research findings about how to evaluate intelligence in an equitable manner
