Insect behaviors are intriguing. Insect behaviors can be influenced by their interactions with host plants, or by pathogen/parasite manipulations in the case of insect vectors. In order to develop behavioral or semiochemical based management strategies for pest management, it is important to understand how insects use visual, olfactory and gustatory cues during their interactions with host plants. Behavioral, chemical, ecological, and neurophysiological tools and techniques are very useful in the investigation of these important cues and insect behaviors. The pathogen acquisition and transmission associated with insect-vectored plant diseases also involves various probing and feeding behaviors. This presentation will focus on understanding some of these intriguing insect behaviors, and the tools and techniques used in the research of plant disease vectors and other major hemipteran pests.
