Dr. Heinz Weidenthaler is the Global Principal Safety Physician for Bavarian Nordic’s Infectious Diseases vaccines. He graduated from Technical University of Munich Medical School in 2000 and completed his MD thesis in immune-oncology. He joined Bavarian Nordic in 2013, initially as Qualified Person for Pharmacovigilance, later in broader roles in clinical research such as VP of Clinical Strategy. He has been working on the clinical development and licensure of the MVA-BN (Imvanex/Imvamune/Jynneos) smallpox and monkeypox vaccine and on several other vaccine candidates, such as for RSV or COVID-19. In the recent years, he was regularly invited as a guest speaker on CDC and WHO poxvirus related panels and advisory committees. He has been involved in research on smallpox and monkeypox from a vaccine manufacturer’s perspective.
