Talia Swartz, MD, PhD, is Senior Associate Dean for MD-PhD Education, Director of the Medical Scientist Program, and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. Dr. Swartz is an NIH-funded investigator studying viral infections and inflammatory signaling. Her laboratory investigates how viral infection of target cells can mediate inflammatory signaling, which accounts for comorbid disease in people with HIV-1 and severe COVID-19. Her laboratory has demonstrated that purinergic inhibition potently blocks HIV-productive infection. Recent work has expanded on how SARS-CoV-2 can impact the activation of inflammatory signaling. Dr. Swartz is Associate Dean for MD/PhD Education, Co-Director of the MD/PhD Program, and passionate about improving the diversity of the physician-scientist pipeline through recruitment, training and support, and career development. She advocates for using social media for scientific, clinical advocacy, education, and professional development, serving on the IDSA Inclusion, Diversity, Access, and Equity Task Force and Digital Strategy Advisory Group, working to streamline messaging to the Infectious Diseases community through digital outreach. Dr. Swartz has co-authored several peer-review articles on the importance of communication in breaking down health disparities and is guest editor of the upcoming Clinical Infectious Diseases Supplement on Digital Strategy and Social Media in Infectious Diseases.
