Learning Lounge Supported By: OpgenThe healthcare burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has repeatedly been emphasized by leading health institutes. The estimated number of annual deaths that might have been prevented by effective antimicrobial therapy has grown to approximately 1.27M.
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) with AMR pathogens are difficult to treat, widespread, and cause complications among hospitalized patients. Lowering the burden of HAI for patients and healthcare institutions requires timely and accurate infection prevention and control (IPC) measures.
Current second- and third-generation sequencing technologies can comprehensively characterize AMR pathogens with a single assay and yield actionable information that can help to control or even prevent AMR outbreaks as well as inform antibiotic stewardship. When coupled with bioinformatics and database solutions, genomic sequencing can a) sensitively identify pathogens, ii) predict antibiotic susceptibility, and iii) identify AMR outbreaks and transmission routes, for example to distinguish between hospital-acquired and community-acquired infections.
Despite the potential of sequencing technologies and an increasing adoption of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for epidemiology, broad-scale adoption of genomic sequencing in healthcare settings has not yet occurred.
This presentation examines the utility of AMR microbial genomics in healthcare settings with a focus on the benefits to patients and on healthcare economics. We present experts offering case evidence for the clinical use and utility of routine WGS for AMR pathogens that highlight recent advances with the potential to facilitate broad-scale adoption.
