Drug-drug interactions and accumulating toxicities can also often limit treatment options. Key to the successful treatment of these complex patients is providing up-to-date knowledge on how to properly identify them in the clinic, how to treat comorbidities and avoid potential drug-drug interactions. Importantly, novel drugs with new mechanisms of action are now available and are crucial for optional care of this population. Clinicians need to be educated on how to best integrate them and other agents into optimal new combination regiments. The 'Managing HIV Patients with Limited Treatment Options` program aims to meet this educational need.

This will be a candid dialogue on respectful scientific communication, in media & social media. A skilled moderator will explore how different judgments, values, evolving data and uncertainty were considered and communicated during the pandemic. Different perspectives will be considered in the context of where we were in the pandemic at that time.

The opinions expressed by the panelists at this session do not necessarily represent the opinions of IDSA, SHEA, HIVMA, PIDS, SIDP and the IDWeek Program Committee. The mission of IDSA, SHEA, HIVMA, PIDS, SIDP and the IDWeek Program Committee is the equitable and optimal management of infectious diseases.

Immediately following this panel discussion, a performance from the sell-out musical about Scottish Scientist Alexander Fleming, the discovery of antibiotics, the risks of drug-resistant infections and the importance of prudent antibiotic use!

The healthcare burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has repeatedly been emphasized by leading health institutes. The estimated number of annual deaths that might have been prevented by effective antimicrobial therapy has grown to approximately 1.27M.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) with AMR pathogens are difficult to treat, widespread, and cause complications among hospitalized patients. Lowering the burden of HAI for patients and healthcare institutions requires timely and accurate infection prevention and control (IPC) measures.

Current second- and third-generation sequencing technologies can comprehensively characterize AMR pathogens with a single assay and yield actionable information that can help to control or even prevent AMR outbreaks as well as inform antibiotic stewardship. When coupled with bioinformatics and database solutions, genomic sequencing can a) sensitively identify pathogens, ii) predict antibiotic susceptibility, and iii) identify AMR outbreaks and transmission routes, for example to distinguish between hospital-acquired and community-acquired infections.

Despite the potential of sequencing technologies and an increasing adoption of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for epidemiology, broad-scale adoption of genomic sequencing in healthcare settings has not yet occurred.

This presentation examines the utility of AMR microbial genomics in healthcare settings with a focus on the benefits to patients and on healthcare economics. We present experts offering case evidence for the clinical use and utility of routine WGS for AMR pathogens that highlight recent advances with the potential to facilitate broad-scale adoption.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a leading cause of death worldwide, fueled by misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Sepsis is the leading cause of hospital deaths, with the mortality rate increasing >6% every hour without effective antibiotic treatment. Rapid AST can help solve both problems. Specific Diagnostics has developed a breakthrough solution that can deliver phenotypic AST results in an average of 5.5 hours, enabling efficient and effective escalation or de-escalation decisions days sooner than traditional methods.

Healthcare-associated Infections (HAI) affect approximately 1 in 25 patients causing nearly 100,000 deaths annually. According to the CDC, approximately 1.7 million infections are acquired by patients treated in American hospitals every year with annual added healthcare costs reaching $30 billion dollars. While whole genome sequencing (WGS) has the potential to make significant impacts for genomic and epidemiological characterization of microbes associated with HAI, there are significant barriers for hospitals adopting WGS as part of routine surveillance. Among those barriers are cost, turnaround time, batching requirements, bioinformatics and computing resources, and maintaining a staff with requisite technical expertise. An affordable, turnkey solution for bacterial isolate sequencing which offers full automation of the entire WGS workflow as well as bioinformatics analysis would significantly mitigate those barriers, enabling hospitals to readily integrate whole-genome microbial surveillance into their infection prevention and control programs. In this learning lounge, we will explore these topics and others with audience members.

    6:00 - 8:00pm - Educational Session

    Description:

Multiple anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have gained Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the US Food and Drug Administration for both treatment and prevention of COVID-19, though the presence of multiple new variants and subvariants has rapidly shifted mAb efficacy and EUA status. Clinicians struggle to remain up to date with a rapidly changing field that has remained a public health concern. A panel of experts will present data on and discuss current evidence and regulatory status for these anti-SARS-CoV-2 mAbs and available antivirals, updates to National Institutes of Health guidelines on patient identification and stratification for both treatment and prevention, implementation through COVID-19 clinic models, and strategies to reduce health care disparities. The panel will utilize additional experts to augment discussion and provide expertise on multiple topics. Please join us for this educational session and earn up to 2.0 CME/CNE/CPE credits!

Novavax, Inc. will host a Learning Lounge event for healthcare professionals attending ID Week 2022. This scientific session will aim to educate healthcare providers on ways to overcome vaccine hesitancy. Studies—and frustrating first-hand experiences—have shown that information and education are not enough. Patients may be hesitant about receiving vaccines for a variety of reasons. Some of these are rooted in what behavioral scientists call "cognitive biases" and others relate to hidden barriers around identity. From a provider perspective you will learn how to tailor patient engagements using these findings.

When bacterial respiratory infections or sepsis are suspected, early intervention with appropriate antibiotic therapy is crucial to outcomes. B·R·A·H·M·S PCT™ is a biomarker widely used to assess the risk of bacterial infection and to aid in antibiotic stewardship in patients with lower respiratory tract infections and sepsis. In this webinar Dr. Broyles will show how using PCT can lead to more appropriate prescribing and earlier cessation of antibiotics. B·R·A·H·M·S PCT has been shown in thousands of publications to safely reduce antimicrobial use while concurrently improving clinical outcomes. Join Dr. Mansour as he discusses his findings about the role of PCT in decreasing length of antibiotic therapy in pneumonia patients.

Despite the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) to infectious diseases patient care, current AST systems limit result speed, accuracy, and consistency. This forces an overreliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics and contributes to antimicrobial resistance, the next global health crisis. While multiple rapid AST technologies are under development, these are restricted to bloodstream infections so they cannot address the vast majority of hospitalized patients with other infections. Join us to explore the new landscape of AST, quicker results that will lead to precise and fast antibiotic treatment, breakpoint updates, and the clinical impact of AST reporting.
