Over the past half-century, various commissions have sought to tackle police reform and bring forth recommendations to modernize and improve training, policies, and practices. This panel will present the findings from a review of four such efforts that took place at tumultuous times for the United States, nearly 50 years apart— the Katzenbach Commission (1965), the Kerner Commission (1967), the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing (2015); and the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice (2020). This panel will present the findings of an in-depth qualitative analysis and identify themes, specific recommendations, efforts to advance those goals, and opportunities for forward progress in collaboration with the field.
