Russ Burnham has an extensive military background, starting with his training at the US Army Medical Department in the Interservice Physician Assistant Program as an undergraduate student and Tripler Army Medical Center as a graduate student. Afterward, he served as a special staff officer for the 1-89 Cavalry Regiment, 2BCT, 10th Mountain Division as well as a squadron physician assistant; the 1-32 Infantry Battalion, 3BCT, 10th Mountain Division as a battalion physician assistant; HHBN/2-12 Cavalry, 1BCT, 1st Cavalry Division as a battalion physician assistant; 1-227 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division as an aeromedical physician assistant, and finished his Army career as the Senior Medical Advisor for 1st Battalion, 3rd Security Forces Assistance Brigade.
During his time in the military, Burnham provided medical care to numerous men and women in austere environments having deployed to Afghanistan twice, most recently returning in summer 2020 where he served as the Senior Medical Advisor to the Afghan National Army 201st Corps Surgeon and the Regional Hospital Commander who oversaw the medical care for six most eastern provinces in Afghanistan and 25,000 Soldiers.
Burnham is also the recipient of many awards and decorations, including recognition as only the second Soldier in history to be recognized as the US Army Soldier of the Year in 2003. He is a Sergeant Audie Murphy Inductee, the 2007 U.S. Army Medical Command NCO of the Year; and was awarded the Ditch Medicine award in 2014 by the US Central Command Surgeon for outstanding battlefield medicine and leadership.
