Assistant Chief Laurie VandeSchoot is known for building inclusive and high-performing cultures that strengthen communities. She is an executive-level change agent who currently serves the Town of Strathmore as Assistant Chief. Prior to that, she worked for The City of Calgary for more than 30 years, rising to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. Apart from the fire service, Laurie consults internationally and has worked in China, the Horn of Africa, the Philippians, and Berlin. She also teaches at postsecondary schools. Laurie holds a Master of Science (MSc, Magna Cum Laude) from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, specializing in Sustainable Development, along with numerous other interdisciplinary degrees and certifications. As a volunteer, Laurie is currently leading 6 different national and international programs and committees for the fire service on diversity, executive leadership, and human relations, and volunteers locally as the Chair of the Centre for Sexuality.
Laurie brings a diverse background of experience to her work. Her rich experience comes from working with businesses, agencies, and organizations to consistently advocate for diverse communities and develop planned change initiatives. She has extensive experience in change management, mental health, public participation, strategic planning, sustainable development, diversity services, and equity solutions.
In recognition of her passion for diversity and inclusion, Laurie has received several accolades including an Immigrants of Distinction, an Organizational Diversity Award for outstanding achievements in implementing cultural diversity initiatives, and a Federation of Canadian Municipalities Award for outstanding contributions to international cooperation. Laurie is married, has two children, and is an active participant and volunteer in sports, arts, and social justice activism. Every day, Laurie aims to live her credo “I educate, I create, I inspire”.
