Chuck Ryan is a 31 year veteran of the fire service, currently serving as the Fire Chief for the Tucson Fire Department in Tucson, Arizona since September 2019. Prior to starting with Tucson Fire, Chuck served for more than 28 years with Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department in Virginia, retiring as an Assistant Chief. In conjunction with his role with Fairfax County Fire & Rescue, he also was a member of Virginia Task Force 1 / USA-1, the department's FEMA and USAID urban search and rescue team for over a decade, serving as a Task Force Leader and Plans Manager.
Chuck holds a Bachelor 's degree (cum laude) from Siena College (1984) and Juris Doctorate from Pepperdine University School of Law (1987). He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program (2015) and also of the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security's Executive Leaders Program (2017). He is also credentialed as a Chief Fire Officer (2019). Chuck is a contract instructor at the National Fire Academy in the Command & Control curriculum and the Managing Officer Program curriculum.
Chuck and his wife reside in Tucson with their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, and they are very active in the community. Chuck serves on the board of directors for the El Rio Health Foundation supporting a health center network in Tucson that provides full-spectrum medical care to underserved communities in and around Tucson. He is also on the board of the Coyote Crisis Collaborative, a multi-disciplinary preparedness
network supporting robust healthcare and other community sector emergency management programs. Suzanne is an active volunteer with the Reid Park Zoo Foundation.
