Sexual identities are not as clear-cut as societal norms once suggested. This session will investigate the broad spectrum of sexual orientations and identities. Fire service organizations around the country are starting to see rising sexual and gender diversity in both their existing members and new recruits, and they are consequently grappling with issues related to the use of gender-specific restrooms, facilities, and equipment. This session will discuss education around appropriate language and responsibility related to treating all members with respect.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to apply a common framework and language for genuine and effective dialogue about gender and sexual diversity (GSD).
Participants will be able to examine the state of non-heterosexual and non-cisgender identified people in the fire service and identify the impact of homophobia and transphobia on its members.
Participants will develop tools & actions for change that will enable members of the fire service to challenge homophobia and transphobia while discovering how the tools will help to build an inclusive and mission-focused organization.
