Dr. Susan J. Mandel, MD, MPH is a Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania where she directed the Endocrine fellowship for 22 years. After medical school at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, she completed a medical residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and a fellowship in endocrinology at the Brigham and Women's. Her clinical practice focuses on patients with thyroid neoplasia and she has been recognized for clinical excellence with the Penn Duhring Clinical Specialist award. Her research interests include the use of sonography in the evaluation of patients with thyroid nodules and cancer, and thyroid disease during pregnancy. Dr. Mandel has over 80 peer reviewed publications in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA and the Annals of Internal Medicine. She has also authored chapters on thyroid neoplasia in Harrison’s Textbook of Medicine and Werner and Ingbar’s The Thyroid.
Dr. Mandel has served on the writing groups for the American Thyroid Association (ATA) Management Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer and the Management of Thyroid Disease during Pregnancy. She is currently co-chairing the 2021 ATA Management Guidelines for Patients with Thyroid nodules. Dr. Mandel also initiated and directed the Ultrasound workshops for the ATA and Endocrine Society. Dr. Mandel has received the Endocrine Society's Distinguished Educator Award, the 2019 WIT Woman of the Year award from the ATA and the H. Jack Baskin Educator Award of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. She is past President of the Endocrine Society, as well as past President of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
