  • Explain the impact of burnout on the Canadian health care workforce and the quality of care using an evidence-based supporting framework 
  • Describe the components of the Stanford Professional Fulfillment model and their relationship to wellness 
  • Explain how medical culture affects well-being as well as the role of meaning in work and joy in medicine 
  • Describe some common barriers to engaging with wellness initiatives 
  • Describe your role in reinforcing, shaping and transforming medical culture 
  • Identify 2-3 strategies to introduce wellness and self-awareness into clinical work environments  
Faculty:
Jillian Horton, MD
Jillian is an award-winning physician, musician, writer and podcaster. She is associate professor of internal medicine and associate head of internal medicine at the University of Manitoba and directs the Alan Klass Health Humanities Program. She has completed a longitudinal internship in teaching mindful practice at the University of Rochester and chief wellness officer training at Stanford University.

Her writing about medicine appears regularly in the Los Angeles Times, The Globe and Mail, Maclean's and Medscape. She hosts the novel series “Arts, Medicine and #Life” at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

In April 2020 she was awarded the prestigious AFMC–Gold Humanism Award by the Gold Foundation for Humanistic Healthcare, Canada, and by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada for her contributions to compassion in clinical care and her leadership in the field of humanities in medical education. Her first full-length book, We Are All Perfectly Fine, about mindfulness, self-compassion and bringing our whole selves to clinical practice, is a national bestseller.

VIRTUAL COURSE 2 | PLI Leading Change: Practical Skills and Approaches for Healthcare Leaders

At the end of this Physician Leadership Institute course, you will be able to: 
  • Differentiate and describe the difference between Change Management and Transition Management, and apply the transition skills needed to effectively address the three stages of transition (ending, transition, beginning); 
  • Demonstrate how the ADKAR framework can assess and enable successful change; 
  • Identify a key change methodology that works for you 
  • Explore how to develop messages regarding change initiatives to influence stakeholders; and 
  • Describe and apply approaches to minimize Resistance to Change and increase engagement.
Faculty: 
Scott Comber, BMEDS, MBA, MA, PhD
Scott has more than 30 years of leadership experience in education, financial, IT, health care and consulting. He established and incorporated two companies of his own before assuming his current role at Dalhousie University, where he is a university teaching fellow with the Rowe School of Business. As a researcher, Scott focuses on health care systems (front-line ownership and applied system complexity approaches), leadership development and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Scott is also president of LeadX, a consulting company that specializes in leadership development and change management. In this role, he works closely with organizations to develop exceptional leaders and facilitate teams through change. He is certified as an executive coach and is an editorial board member of the Canadian Journal of Physician Leadership. 

A keynote speaker, author and award-winning teacher, Scott has been quoted in publications such as The Globe and Mail, Financial Post and Business Week. He holds two master’s degrees (human development and business administration [finance]) and a PhD in human and organizational systems.
