Recantation is prevalent in child sexual abuse cases, especially when the abuser is someone close to the family or from within the home. Part 1 of this session will provide research-based information focusing on practical steps for the MDT to take in the event recantation does occur, as well as steps prosecutors can take to proceed in court. Part 2 will focus on whether, and how, to conduct a recantation interview and provide expert testimony on recantation. Participants should have an understanding of the dynamics of abuse and children’s process of disclosure for this workshop.
Through case studies, discuss ways the team can prevent recantation and address it when it occurs.
Identify ways prosecutors can address recantation when preparing for court and witness testimony.
Observe mock testimony (direct, cross, and redirect) regarding recantation.
