The presentation will provide an introductory overview of this harmful practice, a discussion of the medical ramifications, an explanation of the types of Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting (FGM/C) practiced, a summary of the federal and state laws addressing FGM/C and child abuse, including legal changes created by changes to the federal law as part of the STOP FGM Act of 2020, and suggestions for interviewing victims and witnesses of FGM/C. The presentation will include the following topics: What is FGM/C and the reasons FGM/C is performed; the social, cultural, economic, and religious issues associated with FGM/C; the prevalence of FGM/C; the short and long-term health risks for FGM/C; the Federal and state laws associated with FGM/C; the association between FGM/C and child abuse; and the sensitivities associated with interviewing victims of FGM/C.
