I am an academic researcher with a major focus on the immune basis of prostate disease in humans. We have active research interest in benign urological conditions like chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Research focuses on how immune dysfunction contributes to pain in CP/CPPS and LUTS in BPH. Mast cells are a particular focus for their function as disease drivers but also as targets for developing diagnostics and therapeutics. In patient cohorts, we examine how epigenetic mechanisms contribute to disease pathways and lead to regulatory immune deficits. We utilize commensal and pathogenic microbial residents of the prostate to develop therapeutics that have immuno- and neuro-modulatory function. These novel therapeutics are being studied for utililty in chronic pelvic pain and to advance response to immunotherapy in prostate cancer.
