Learning Objectives:

Distinguish various types of priapism and discern the appropriate evaluation and intervention for each type.
Utilize medication treatment regimens to prevent recurrent ischemic priapism.
Medically manage ischemic priapism episodes.
Perform surgical management of ischemic priapism with a variety of shunt techniques.
Determine when penile prosthesis placement is appropriate for priapism management.

This course addresses the strong need for increased competence with the evaluation and management of priapism. Adequate priapism management requires regular retraining in order to remain current. Practicing urologists, residents, and advanced practice providers (APP) may be familiar with the 2003 AUA Best Practice Statement on priapism management but may not be comfortable with implementing the recommended techniques. Our course aims to educate these populations in order to increase competence with the management of this complex disease.

Our course also reinforces the upcoming release of the AUA priapism guidelines, and 2 of our faculty are on the guideline committee. As a result, we can provide precise evidence-based guidance regarding the medical and surgical management of priapism. Emphasis will be placed on the management of ischemic priapism, including prevention, medical management, surgical management with shunts, and surgical management with penile prostheses. Our target audiences are urologists, residents and APPs, all of whom need to be familiar with managing this urologic emergency.
