Dr. Cates is a native of California’s Central Valley. He attended the University of California San Diego where he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology before receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Illinois. He then returned to California to complete his residency training in Otolaryngology –Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California Davis. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at the University of Pittsburgh and the Univeristy of California San Francisco. There he gained expertise in microlaryngeal operative techniques, laser surgery, and office-based laryngeal procedures. Dr. Cates is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California Davis. He also serves our nation’s veterans as a staff Otolaryngologist at the Northern California VA Health System. He specializes in the field of laryngology and bronchoesophagology and his clinical interests span the breadth of voice, swallowing, and upper aerodigestive tract disorders.
