2022 Canadian Animal Industries Award for Extension and Public Service Recipient
Sponsored by Canadian Pork Council, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Beef Cattle Research Council, and Dairy Farmers of Canada

Emma McGeough’s industry-relevant research program and expertise have led to a prolific extension program that includes numerous industry and scientific presentations and articles. She has participated in several large conference planning committees, including the Sustainability of Canadian Agriculture Conference and Animal Nutrition Conference of Canada Planning Committees, which serve to ensure that research outcomes are communicated to the industry. Most notable is Emma’s service on numerous University, as well as national/provincial, and industry boards and committees.  Several of these committees set the direction of research and extension, such as the Manitoba Protein Consortium, and the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiative, and the National Dairy Research Strategy Focus Group on Dairy Farm Environmental Sustainability. Finally, we would be remiss if we did not recognize Emma’s accomplishments in education/teaching thereby impacting the next generation of producers.  In 2021, Emma was named “Teacher of the Year” by students in her course.  She uses novel teaching strategies and incorporates relevant aspects of her research into her course material. An example is an assignment that includes the development of a grazing plan that incorporates the Holos model, thereby increasing familiarity with the model with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the efficiency of grazing systems. It is evident that Emma’s outreach activities, service on a wide range of boards and committees and novel approaches to teaching have significantly impacted the cattle industry, and demonstrate that she is worthy of receiving the Canadian Animal Industries Award in Extension and Public Service.
