Senior VP and Founder RAD-Planning and Gilk Radiology Consultants Overland Park, KS
JPS Healthcare is a county-operated hospital in downtown Ft. Worth, with a wide-ranging patient population and incredibly varied patient care demands. This presentation shares a three-part story of transformation of JPS's MRI services.
Initially, Imaging Services Administration identified growing problems with patient and staff safety in its MRI service; how policies, practices, and staff development had been stagnant when clinical demands had been growing. The first step was to stop the slide on safety and bring hospital staff, radiologists, and policies in-line with immediate clinical demands.
Second, champions within Imaging Services pushed to make changes to improve practices and knowledge in both direct patient care (technologists), and clinical supervision (radiologists). This also included new policies and tools, such as the MRI safety algorithmic device assessment and keyword harvesting of prior radiology reports for indicators of MRI contraindications, to strengthen Imaging Services practices.
The third-act in this quality improvement story involves Imaging Services increasing their outreach and collaboration between MRI services and referring groups, such as ED, ICU, and Cardiology, and supporting services such as Respiratory and Anesthesia.
Included in the transformation story are new MRI scanners, an expanded MRI suite with improved physical safety features, increasing patient access, and a wholesale reinvention of culture.
