Dr. Zimmerman is internationally recognized as a leading expert in long-term care services and supports for older adults. She is a founder and director of the Collaborative Studies of Long-Term Care, the largest research consortium of assisted living and other long-term care settings across the country, and is co-Editor-in-Chief of JAMDA – The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and numerous foundations, she has led almost 100 research projects in thousands of settings across the nation, involving tens of thousands of staff, residents, and their family members. The focus of the Collaborative is on the quality of life and quality of care of individuals living and working in long-term care, and is conducted in close collaboration with long-term care providers and other stakeholders. Dr. Zimmerman’s work has influenced policy and practice through her close collaborations with national provider and policy organizations, including but not limited to the Center for Excellence in Assisted Living, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, and LeadingAge. For many years she convened the Assisted Living Special Interest Group of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the largest gerontological research organization in the country, and was Chair of the GSA Social Research, Practice, and Policy Section.
