Post-limb loss pain management is a major focus of limb loss care. Differentiating the types of pain and understanding current and advances techniques of managing this pain is vital for rehabilitation professionals. The aim of this symposium is to present a mechanistic overview of the clinical approach to post-limb loss pain management with a focus on standard of care as well as advanced and emerging techniques. The symposium starts with outlining a mechanistic approach to limb loss pain, with a focus on types of pain, underlying mechanisms, and related standard of care non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic clinical management. Brain reorganization principles that underlie advanced and emerging pain management techniques are described, followed by an overview of advanced and emerging pain management techniques including electroacupuncture, botulinum toxin injections, neuromodulation, Guided Motor Imagery, virtual reality, brain-computer interfaces and holistic integrated medicine.
