Parent interventions are effective in treating disruptive behaviors in children and adolescents. However, we also know that they are not equally effective in all children and adolescents, and not all families are reached by our interventions. New approaches are thus necessary to provide effective care to all those in need.
During this symposium we will present several approaches in improving behavioral treatments and their reach for children and adolescents with disruptive behaviors First, we will discuss an RCT on a self-help parenting program with and without supportive phone calls. While results suggest that the supportive phone calls might increase program adherence, both variants of the self-help program were effective compared to a waiting list control. Self-help programs are one way of extending the reach of evidence-based interventions. In the second presentation, we will discuss the creation and dissemination of animated videos describing evidence-based strategies for parents and adolescents with ADHD. We will describe the reach, utility, and usage of the content as well as feedback from users.
In presentations 3 and 4, we will discuss a microtrial that compared stimulus control to contingency management techniques, and explored which children responded better to which type of technique. Results of this microtrial suggest that attachment style, but also neuropsychological functioning moderate the response to two commonly used behavioral parenting techniques. Lastly, results of a new research approach, i.e., individual participant data meta-analysis, will be discussed. This approach is highly suitable to detect which families benefit more or less from treatments. While this approach is highly promising, there are also some pitfalls that need to be taken into consideration which will be discussed.
Improving the reach and effectiveness of our behavioral interventions is of utmost importance. This symposium presents findings using different methodological approaches. We will discuss the most promising options and possibilities for the future.
