Individuals with misophonia experience intense emotional and physiological reactions to certain sounds that may contribute to severe distress and impairment across life areas (Swedo et al., 2022). Misophonia is a newly identified disorder that has distinct features; yet, often co-occurs with other conditions (e.g., OCD/OCPD, mood disorders; Jager et al., 2020). Studies have shown misophonia symptoms are relatively common in college samples, with between 20 - 49% of individuals reporting clinically significant symptoms (Naylor et al., 2020; Wu et al., 2014); however, this prevalence is thought to vary in other populations. Over the last two decades, misophonia has received greater attention in clinical and research communities; however, there is still much to be learned. For instance, little is known about the etiology and treatment of misophonia, and given the early and emerging nature of this disorder, there is a dearth of information on stakeholder and public perceptions of misophonia. Accordingly, this series of presentations describes novel findings that will advance our understanding of misophonia.
The first presentation provides much needed information on phenotypes of misophonia by investigating the co-occurrence of current and lifetime psychiatric disorders among individuals with misophonia. Next, the second presentation uses innovative neuroscientific methods to inform treatments to regulate distress associated with misophonia. Specifically, this presenter will discuss findings from an experimental study examining pre-post changes in misophonia-specific neural targets when undergoing different conditions (downregulating vs. listening) and neurostimulation (low/high active vs. sham). The third presentation addresses the lack of treatments for misophonia by describing outcomes and mechanisms of change from an ongoing trial examining the efficacy of the Unified Protocol for Children/Adolescents (UP-C/A) modified to treat youth with misophonia. Expanding upon directions for misophonia treatments, the fourth presentation considers stakeholder perspectives by investigating perceptions of misophonia treatments among adults with misophonia and parents of youth with misophonia. The findings reveal dissatisfaction with the current status of treatments for misophonia and indicates the importance of integrating patient perspectives into the rollout of evidence-based interventions (e.g., CBT). Finally, the fifth presentation takes a broad approach to ongoing misophonia research and dissemination by investigating public awareness of misophonia. This study examines recognition and knowledge of misophonia in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults.
This symposium will conclude with remarks from the discussant (an expert with over 175 articles in OCD, anxiety, misophonia, and related areas) who will provide comment on the current state of misophonia research and important next steps for researchers and clinicians.
