Escalations in microaggression, discrimination, and violent attacks against members of the Asian community since the beginning of the Covid-19 global pandemic have brought attention to longstanding racial inequities. Given the current racial climate and global context, understanding lived experience and challenges of AAPI community through the lens of the AAPI community and the general public is critical. The purpose of this symposium is to provide a series of talks that address public mental health concerns with a particular focus on supporting the AAPI community. The application of the interdisciplinary framework and culturally informed research methodology will be discussed. The speakers apply a wide range of methodologies, including time-series analyses, qualitative analyses, and psychometric work. Centering racial justice, associated implications for clinical practice, advocacy, and policy will be discussed.
Speaker 1 conducts qualitative semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (i.e., leaders, representatives) from organizations serving the AAPI population at the national and state (California) levels to identify research priorities for the AAPI community. Speaker 2 using Google Trends data and interrupted time-series analyses to examine changes in online search interest in racially charged terms and treatment seeking terms since the beginning of the Covid-19 global pandemic and the impact of media events on search patterns. To address the rising number of eating disorder diagnoses since the beginning of Covid-19 global pandemic, Speaker 3 developed a scale to measure positive body image among Asian Americans. Results will be discussed in the context of understanding internalized racism and resisting white supremacy.
Our discussant will describe how the range of methods presented – population-level patterns, formulative studies, and measurement development – can improve equity in care and inform effective dissemination and implementation of CBT and other empirically supported care. Our discussant will also offer policy and clinical implications, and future directions for combatting anti-Asian racism and supporting AAPI community.
