The American Academy of Family Physicians (2019) defines intimate partner violence (IPV) as experiences in dating or romantic relationships involving physical and sexual assault, emotional or psychological maltreatment, threats and intimidation, economic abuse, and violation of individual rights. IPV is, unfortunately, quite common in the US (Smith et al., 2018; Taquette et al., 2019). Numerous studies have found that IPV was associated with deleterious mental health problems (e.g., depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation) and health risk behaviors (e.g., alcohol and drug misuse, unprotected sex; Exner-Cortens et al., 2013; Shorey et al., 2012; Taquette et al., 2019). Notably, sexual and gender minority (SGM) people report higher rates of IPV (Langenderfer-Magruder, 2014; Shorey et al., 2019; Sterzing et al., 2019). Despite these higher rates of IPV among SGM people, few studies have examined IPV in SGM people. This dearth in research is particularly problematic, as it limits our ability to effectively identify at risk SGM people and develop inclusive, culturally informed IPV prevention and intervention efforts. Therefore, this symposium will highlight research aimed at addressing this gap in empirical literature by compiling recent findings on the associations between IPV and risk factors (e.g., childhood abuse, alcohol use, minority stress) among SGM people. Across these presentations, the presenters use novel and innovative research methodology to ascertain these associations, including with dyadic and prospective data. Presenter 1 will compare the prevalence of sexual IPV victimization and perpetration in SGM youth with cisgender and heterosexual youth as well as elaborate on how various forms of childhood abuse and inaccurate means of sexual education predict sexual IPV in a gender and sexually diverse sample. Extending this, Presenter 2 will elucidate the effects of PTSD symptoms, heterosexist discrimination, alcohol consumption, and interactions between each variable on forms of dating violence perpetration (i.e., physical, psychological, sexual) among a sample of SGM young adults in dating relationships. Presenter 3 will document the effects of specific forms of external SGM stress (e.g., harassment, victimization), internal SGM stress, and problematic drinking on sexual-IPV perpetration using dyadic data within the actor-partner interdependence model. Finally, Presenter 4 will underscore within- and between-persons associations between of minority stress (i.e., SGM victimization, microaggressions, internalized heterosexism, and sexual orientation concealment) with several types of IPV. At the conclusion of these presentations, a clinical psychologist with expertise in IPV among SGM people, relationship education, and couples interventions will lead a discussion on these studies’ findings and their implications for policy, prevention, intervention, and future research directions. In summary, this symposium provides a noteworthy contribution to this research area by examining conceptual models of IPV risk among SGM people using rigorous research methodology. These findings can aid inclusive IPV prevention and intervention efforts by identifying salient risk factors unique to SGM people.
