Charles A. Laughlin is Weedon Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Virginia. His publications include Chinese Reportage: The Aesthetics of Historical Experience (Duke, 2002) and The Literature of Leisure and Chinese Modernity (Hawai’i, 2008). He also co-edited and contributed an introduction and translations to By the River: Seven Contemporary Chinese Novellas (Oklahoma UP, 2016). His current research is on desire in Chinese revolutionary literature and film.
