Recognizing the gap of published research in the area of certification in PM&R and its subspecialties, the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) has increased efforts to conduct and disseminate research relevant to its mission of serving and supporting physicians and the public through a certification process that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning. This research is relevant for board-certified physiatrists and those with subspecialty certification, as ABPMR diplomates complete annual certification requirements to promote growth and learning in their practice. Published research must be shared to inform physiatrists of the findings, trends, and developments in the field; plans to conduct more research in this area should be discussed to continue the mission of a certification process that benefits all members in the field of PM&R.
This session will summarize key findings of about 20 studies published by ABPMR staff and leadership in the last 5-6 years, including some that were conducted in partnership with other key organizations such as ACGME and AAPM&R. The topics covered in this session will be organized in three main categories: research on initial certification, continuing certification, and subspecialty certification. Speakers will discuss the implications and limitations of the published research and its relevance to diplomates, trainees, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Discussion on future research considerations will also be incorporated with feedback and perspectives from the audience on potential areas for future research. To enhance interaction, individual speakers for each topic will engage the other course faculty panel for their perspectives and insights as appropriate the specific topic being presented. Audience engagement and interaction will be incorporated with each topic presentation and during Q&A at the end of the session.
